Unlocking Traffic Congestion in Maroochydore: A Comprehensive Plan

‍I’ve written a lot about Maroochydore as the new CBD is extremely exciting for the coast & it’s still a fairly big secret. I assume as the Olympics gets closer and closer it won’t be a secret for much longer.

While still a bit of a secret, Maroochydore is experiencing an unprecedented population surge. As the city grows, so does the number of commuters, visitors, and residents. With its key commuter routes Sugar Road and Maud Street becoming heavily congested during peak hours, the need for a comprehensive plan is becoming increasingly evident.

1. THE PROBLEM

1.1 TRAFFIC CONGESTION

As Maroochydore continues its rapid expansion, its main transit routes, namely Sugar Road and Maud Street, are becoming increasingly congested, especially during peak hours. These routes are a key part of the daily commute for many residents. The existing situation is far from ideal, with motorists experiencing long delays and traffic queues.

1.2 LACK OF SAFE PATHS

Another issue is the lack of off-road paths for pedestrians and cyclists. The absence of safe, dedicated paths for these groups, making it dangerous for them to navigate these routes.I’ve now seen a few motorised scooters whiz past me at frightening speeds while I sit in traffic.

2. THE SOLUTION

2.1 ROAD SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS

The Sunshine Coast Council has identified the need for improvement in road safety and the reduction of congestion as a top priority. Although construction of the upgrade isn’t expected to begin before 2026, the council is already seeking community feedback to improve the plans.

You can have your say about this proposal here on the Sunshine Coast website. Where you can see the detailed proposals and interactive plans

2.2 WALKING AND RIDING PATHS

Providing safe, off-road paths for walkers and riders is another key component of the planned upgrade. This will not only improve safety for these groups but also promote healthier and more sustainable modes of transport.

3. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

The community is invited to share their feedback on the concept design on the Sunshine Coast Council Have Your Say website from August 18 to September 15. The council also plans to hold four community drop-in sessions to gather more input.

  • Saturday, August 26, 10.00am-3.00pm at Sunshine Plaza (Ground floor near Mister Minit), Maroochydore
  • Thursday, August 31, 3.00pm-7.00pm at Sunshine Plaza (Ground floor near Mister Minit), Maroochydore
  • Tuesday, September 5, 11.30am-3.30pm at 89 Sugar Road, Maroochydore
  • Thursday, September 7, 11.30am-3.30pm at Maroochydore Library, 44 Sixth Avenue, Maroochydore

4. THE BENEFITS

The upgrade will bring many benefits, not only for motorists but also for pedestrians, cyclists, and businesses in the area. Rick Baberowski, the Transport Portfolio Councillor, highlighted these advantages.

4.1 REDUCED DELAYS AND IMPROVED SAFETY

The planned upgrade will reduce delays and improve safety for all road users, including buses, private vehicles, freight, and emergency vehicles.

4.2 IMPROVED CONNECTIVITY AND ACCESSIBILITY

The improved design includes new, separated two-way cycle tracks, wider pedestrian paths, and intersection upgrades. This will greatly improve the connectivity and accessibility of the area, benefiting locals, schools, and businesses.

4.3 HEALTHIER, USER-FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT

The project aims to create a healthier, user-friendly environment by including landscaping and street lighting in the design.

5. THE FUTURE

The council is aware of the growth projections for the Sunshine Coast, with more than 500,000 people expected to call it home by 2041. The daily car trips around the coast are forecast to increase from 1.2 million to 2 million by 2041. To cope with this, the council is investing in new walking and riding infrastructure and advocating for better public transport. They are also delivering the ThinkChange travel behaviour change program to encourage less car use.

In conclusion, the planned upgrades to Sugar Road and Maud Street are a necessary step towards a more sustainable, safer, and user-friendly Maroochydore. The council’s proactive approach and commitment to community consultation sets a positive tone for the future of the city.
